By a 98-1 vote, the Senate Armed Services Committee confirmed retired Marine Corps Gen. James Mattis to be the 26th SecDef , followed by Vice President Michael R. Pence administering his oath of office on 20 January 2017. Secretary James Mattis arrived at the Pentagon for his first full day of office on January 21, 2017.
